In 1895, Michel Cazes started what would later become one of the most important estates in the Roussillon. A pioneer in the region, the Cazes family have been working with the same love of their vines and winemaking for four generations. With the desire for greater sustainability and respect for the land, in 1997 the 220 hectare-estate became certified biodynamic, the largest estate in France to receive this certification. Today, winemaking at the estate is led by fourth-generation family member Emmanuel Cazes who's vision of biodynamics is to "work with nature on the land that we want to see alive, expressing itself and sustainable."
Tucked up northeast of the great Pyrenees Mountains, the Roussillon region opens like an amphitheater towards the Mediterranean, rounded by Corbières Mountain to the north, Canigou Mountain in the west and Les Albères to the south. The region has a great diversity of soils and microclimates, with altitude and proximity to the sea having large impacts on climate. The region has had a long history of producing France’s most prized Vins Doux Naturels; it accounts for 80% of France’s AOP production of this wine style. Improvements to winemaking technology and a greater understanding of soils and viticulture has opened the door the dry wines of the Roussillon in recent decades.
The 220 hectares of vineyards of Domaine Cazes are comprised of predominantly clay-limestone soil strewn with schist detritus and large pudding stones, similar to Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The family's vineyards produce wines in a variety of prestigious appellations including Roussillon, Côtes de Roussillon Villages, Fitou, Maury, Rivesaltes, and Muscat de Rivesaltes. France’s Guide Hacette has awarded several of Domaine Cazes’ dry and fortified wines with its top honor, the Coup de Cœur, a testament to the family’s commitment to winemaking excellence.
